Japan Donation

Had a busy day — hadn’t had a chance to hop on Tumblr until now. See all these icons with Japanese flags overlaid on them in my stream. Immediately understand what’s going on. Look to the right side of the Dashboard. Donation took 3 seconds. Easiest thing in the world. Ingenious implementation.

They did this previously for the BP spill and gave the black dashboard background (which I love and now exclusively use) as a goodie to those who donated. Very well done.

Also a great way to get credit cards on file to upsell virtual goods, of which I did buy a few after that, and didn’t do before because I couldn’t be bothered to pull out my credit card. Really smart: everybody wins. (I think Tumblr has mostly given up on the whole virtual goods thing though.)

Interestingly, for BP Tumblr promised to match donations, which was also a big reason why I donated there and not elsewhere. They don’t seem to be doing so this time, even though they raised $30 million in the meantime.

Anyway, here’s why I won’t be donating to Japan.
