It’s kind of amazing
that liberals are stating as utterly obvious the idea that marriage is a purely private contract, when it has never in the history of humanity been understood that way.
This, more than institution-vs-contract (which is really a subset of this), and “traditional”-vs-same sex, is what is profoundly changing here.
I still support same-sex marriage, but I’m pretty sure if the view of marriage as a purely private institution truly takes root the social consequences over the long run will be disastrous. (Particularly for women, because they mainly benefit from the protections of a more institutional view of marriage.)
